A Creative Ruin

The Werksviertel in Munich is a beloved alternative scene for local artists and innovators. The place is going under modernization and during Corona Crisis many old buildings are left demolished without further plans. But the creative community has made the best out of it. They make the destroyed place to be enjoyable and to make us think about our modern world. Where once potato dumplings were made, a creative urban district with a colorful mix of art and culture will emerge in the next few years on the eastern edge of Munich's city center. The charm of the existing industrial architecture will contrast with the contemporary new buildings. In contrast to many other urban developments, in the Werksviertel the buildings that have defined the history of the area are not destroyed, but modernized and given new uses. Historic structures serve as an exciting contrast to modern buildings. Converted industrial buildings and numerous new buildings provide architectural exclamation points and a metropolitan field of tension that is unique in Munich.

The creative community in the Werksviertel is organised in the Kunstlabor. It is one of the largest art projects in Munich. Excluding the public and hidden behind the façade of the former Tengelmann headquarters in Landbergerstraße, national and international artists of urban and contemporary art have been working on their individual "spatial experiments". Among other things, the numerous relics of the former office complex served as inspiration and backdrop for their works - mouse-grey wallpaper became canvases, file folders became sculptures and office cabinets became installations. Spraying, painting, hammering and artistic realisation took place on several floors. With the friendly support of AXA IM – Real Assets and the real estate developer FOM Real Estate, the KUNSTLABOR was created over many months.
