Nominated for the Tassilo Culture Prize of the Süddeutsche Zeitung

Nominated April 12, 2021:  Promoting the cultural sector in the Munich area and motivating creative artists - these are the goals of the Tassilo Culture Prize, which the Süddeutsche Zeitung is offering for the eleventh time this year. Ten recognition prizes, three main prizes and a prize for civil courage will be awarded. The SZ Prize is named after the Bavarian Duke Tassilo. Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) is a German national daily newspaper. It is published in Munich. SZ is the second largest daily newspaper in Germany (as of October 2020). Juror March 6, 2021: Michael Nguyen is part of the Judging Panel of the MONOVISIONS BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS 2021. The aim of the contest is to discover the best monochrome photographers from all over the world and deliver the best opportunities to be recognized and rewarded for their work. The power of design and the contradictions between art and life

Article March 5, 2021: The professor for Design Theory Rainer Funke wrote an article about my series Mira Shopping Center: "The power of design and the contradictions between art and life - Michael Nguyen photographs Munich's most colourful shopping center facade". Prof. Dr. Funke researches and publishes on design-theoretical issues from a semiotic, cultural-theoretical and philosophical perspective and works as a design consultant for companies. He teaches design theory at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences. After studying philosophy at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, he earned his doctorate in semiotics and subsequently worked in design-theoretical research at Burg Giebichenstein - University of Art and Design Halle. In 1992, he was appointed to Potsdam as the founding dean of the Department of Design. Rainer Funke was the owner of a design agency, chairman of the board of the Brandenburg Design Center, and visiting professor at the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz. Find out more

A Photography Series about an old hospital built in 1938-1939

Project March 1, 2021: A Photography Series about an old hospital for German Air Force soldiers suffering from tuberculosis in 1943-1945 and a Sanatorium for the US Army to treat displaced persons and concentration camp inmates after the II. World War: In 1938-1939, an anti-aircraft barracks was built on Unterbrunner Straße in Gauting near Munich (Starnberg District, Bavaria) according to a design by the German Air Force Construction Office together with the architect Würsbach, which was converted into a hospital for German Air Force  soldiers suffering from tuberculosis in 1943-1945. After the end of the war, the lung clinic was used by the US Army to  treat displaced persons and concentration camp inmates suffering from Tuberculosis. Today in the front part of the extensive grounds, Asklepios operates a hospital for pneumology, thoracic surgery, intensive care, sleep and respiratory medicine. The site and its buildings are and have been used for numerous national and international film productions, including: an episode for the German crime series "Soko 5113. The actress Emma Watson, known from the Harry Potter films, was here in front of the camera for a historical thriller directed by Oscar winner Florian Gallenberger about the notorious Colonia Dignidad in Chile.  Find out more

Corona Pandemic - The Poetry of Urban Spaces. A melancholic Journey

Project January 26, 2021 A focus of Michael Nguyen's works since COVID-19 are urban landscapes as well as urban spaces in different Bavarian cities. Urban spaces can all enrich a life between buildings. Sports facilities, parking lots, bus stops, children's playgrounds, sidewalks, bike racks, shopping mall forecourts, and more are all places where necessary, voluntary, and social outdoor activities are possible and offer the opportunity to grow social life in the city.
